Choose a mahjong set for the rules your group actually plays. A set labeled American mahjong and one labeled Chinese mahjong may have different tile composition and accessories. Total tile count alone does not prove that a package fits your game.
Check the rules card first
The National Mah Jongg League publishes an annual card for its American game. Check the current edition and whether a genuine card is included in the exact package. A general rule booklet, mat or decorative card is not automatically the current NMJL card. The League’s official store lists its current card.
Compare what is inside
- Tile composition: read the listing’s inventory, including jokers and spare tiles where stated.
- Tile size: compare dimensions, not just terms such as large or premium.
- Racks and accessories: confirm how many are included and whether a mat, dice, bag or pushers are listed.
- Package count: 160 or 166 tiles can describe the shipped contents, including additional tiles; check the actual inventory.
Buying for an American group
Ask which rules and card they use before choosing a set. Then check tile composition, racks and the annual card separately. The MrCarbon, MUTEX and My Mahjong Trove listings offer different package details; compare the exact item rather than assuming every accessory comes with every set.
Buying a Chinese set
Confirm the variant of the game your group plays and the required tiles. Check whether symbols, dimensions and case contents fit that group. A Chinese-labeled package is not automatically interchangeable with an American-labeled one.
Is a higher tile count always better?
No. The right composition and usable accessories matter more than the headline number. A larger pack can include spare tiles, while a smaller pack can still serve a particular game. Ask for clarification if the package inventory is incomplete.
